The 10th Annual September Concert extended its reach to St.
Petersburg, Moscow, Warsaw, Poznan, Nairobi, Port-de-Paix(Haiti),
Sydney, Nottingham(U.K.), Windhoek(Namibia)... We estimate that at least
30,000 people organized, performed, or helped in some way to make this
happen.
We've had over 1,500 concerts since we started in 2002. A
year before that, on Sept 20, 2001, NY Philharmonic canceled its
Opening Night Gala and instead gave a performance of Brahms's Requiem
for the people of NYC. Words spoken by Beverly Sills on that occasion
are worth repeating:
"This performance isn't simply a
concert, and it is not merely a memorial or a tribute, or a thank you
to those who have done so much for others. It is a statement that there
will be no victory to those who attack our spirit. It is an emphatic
affirmation of who we are as people and as a family. Nothing could say
it with more eloquence, more heart, and more defiance than music."
This is why we do what we do. So thank you for joining us!
